Tryouts: Tryouts are a very important part of the Cherokee Trail Girls Volleyball program. Players work hard to attain their goal of making a team and are evaluated as coaches try to make decisions that will best benefit the CT volleyball program and our four teams. Tryouts are hard work and can be very emotional. Few athletes will be selected to a team, and most will, unfortunately, fall short of that goal. We will apply a rigorous set of tests, drills, and other assessments to make the decisions that will benefit our program and teams the most. We will treat all of our athletes with respect and let them know our decisions as quickly as possible. At the end of the process, athletes will know they have earned their spot on the team.
Tryouts for CT Girls Volleyball start Monday, August 9th @ 4:30 PM for incoming Freshmen and @ 5:45 PM for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. All tryout sessions will be held in the Main and Aux gyms at Cherokee Trail High School. In order to be eligible to try out, students MUST HAVE REGISTERED for athletics with the school. Details for how to complete this process can be found below.
Tryouts will be held over three days - Monday, August 9th, Tuesday, August 10th, and Wednesday, August 11th.
As of now, we have more than 115 athletes competing for roughly 40-45 roster spots across four teams. Each night, the coaching staff will trim down the number of athletes in the tryout based on test results and assessments. On the first night, we expect to trim the group by only making "call backs" to somewhere between 70 and 85 athletes. On the second night, we will make call backs for approximately 50 to 65 athletes. All teams will be decided by the end of the third night.
At the start of tryouts, each athlete will be assigned a tryout number. After each night of tryouts, we will post "Call Backs" which are a list of tryout numbers that should attend the next night of tryouts. Any athlete not on that "Call Back" list should not attend any additional sessions. The coaching staff will send out declination letters via email to the email address on file for any player not on the call back list each night.

If declined players have any questions or concerns they would like to address with me or any of the coaching staff, they should WAIT 24 HOURS then reach out to me or any of the coaching staff via email and schedule a short meeting before any upcoming practice to have a discussion. These meetings MUST be with the player and the coach and will NOT include parents. We want to help athletes learn and grow from this experience, and self-advocacy, accountability, and mature communication are all benefits athletes can take from this process. Waiting 24 hours is very important. As discussed earlier, tryouts can be emotional, and we want players and parents to have some time to settle emotions, think about the experience and what they really need answered, then be prepared to have a constructive conversation with the coaches.
Players not making a cut or ultimately not making a team will get a declination letter emailed to them as decisions are made. If a player is NOT on a "Call Back" list and DOES NOT receive a declination letter, please reach out to me for clarification.
Declined players may still have an opportunity to participate during the season - each team typically relies on the assistance of one or more Team Managers. Interested players should contact any team coach and express their interest anytime after tryouts has completed. Only responsible, enthusiastic, team-players need apply.
Players selected to a team are expected to report with a parent to a mandatory player / parent meeting on Thursday, August 12th at 4:30 PM in the main gym. The meeting should only last an hour or so as we share ground rules, expectations, and answer questions.
